F1 news: World Cup 2018 forces Formula One to take ‘emergency measure’

FORMULA ONE motorsport director Ross Brawn says next year’s World Cup had a big impact on their planning of the 2018 race calendar.

Next year’s F1 championship will consist of 21 races for the first time.

And it will also feature a triple header - three races on consecutive weekends - with France, Austria and Britain taking place at the end of June and beginning of July.

Brawn has revealed the reason for the three consecutive races is down to the World Cup final being played on July 15.

"The [football] World Cup presented us with a very unusual problem,” Brawn said.

"The final is in the afternoon and it would have been very unfair to have run a race on that weekend.

"We could only solve that by having three races in a row but it's not something we want to repeat in the future. It was an emergency measure."

Brawn recently spoke about another big change in F1 with the decision to change the logo a “major priority” with its predecessor neither iconic or memorable.

"Over the past few days the question was asked as to whether the logo is really a major priority and the answer is yes," said Brawn, in a regular post-race newsletter sent out by F1 chiefs.

"Apart from the commercial aspects, the new logo is much more flexible in terms of its use, especially when it comes to its application on merchandising and in the digital world.

"It has impact. The old logo was neither iconic or memorable.

"It was important to let Formula 1 fans see that we are entering a new era.

"Our sport is changing and must look to the future and also outside its own environment if it is to attract new fans, especially among the young.

"We believe this logo exemplifies this desire: in a world where visual communication is ever more important, we must also move in this direction."
