Bali volcano latest: SHOCK graph - volcanic activity at Mount Agung SOARS

BALI’S Mount Agung is on the brink of a second and more damaging eruption as increased volcanic activity causes thousands to flee the danger zone.

Mount Agung continues to cause chaos in Bali with the latest increased seismic energy producing a flow of red-hot lava out of the volcano.

The seismograph by volcanologist Dr Graeme Wheller shows Mount Agung’s increased volcanic activity as a thick plume of smoke pours out of the volcano.

The could prove life-threatening to residents who refuse to leave the danger zone as authorities warn of another more violent eruption.

Magma Indonesia warned an eruption could be imminent, writing on Twitter: “At this time, to produce an eruption, it does not need any more Volcanic Earthquakes as much as the period September-October 2017 because magma to the surface is already open.”

Up to 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the danger zone surrounding the Bali volcano and thousands of tourists have been stranded.

Bali farmers working on the land surrounding Mount Agung believe they must stay in the hazard zone despite requests from the government to leave.

Cattle farmer Wayan Sweca told Al Jazeera: “If somebody manages to convince my people to come down, I’ll do everything to help.

“At least I won’t be accused of violating the Government’s instructions. I really support the Government’s efforts but I love my people very much.”

Indonesian authorities have raised the volcano's alert to the highest level and expanded the danger zone to six miles.

Officials from the Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement on Monday a Bali volcano eruption is “imminent”.

Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, killing more than 1,000 people and destroying many villages in one of the most devastating eruptions in Indonesia’s history.

Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre warned an eruption of a size similar to that seen in 1963 could send huge rocks flying a distance of up to five miles and volcanic gas a distance of six miles within three minutes.
