REVEALED: Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding date – and the UK WILL get Bank Holiday

PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding is set for a day set for May 2018 and Britons will get a Bank Holiday weekend, it can be revealed.

The highly-anticipated announcement of Harry and Meghan’s engagement was confirmed by a “delighted” Prince Charles in a brief statement issued by Clarence House on Monday morning.

Speculation was rife that there would be another Bank Holiday after the UK enjoyed a day off to celebrate the weddings of Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne.

Theresa May later faced a backlash when she announced British workers would not get a Bank Holiday for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, adding that seeing “two young people in love” should be enough.

However, according to reports, it can now be revealed that the UK will get a Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the royal wedding – but it is one Britain already had.

The wedding is set for Saturday, May 26, 2018 which falls on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, according to The Sun.

The couple have already confirmed they will tie the knot at St George’s Chapel Windsor Castle, where Harry’s father the Prince of Wales married the Duchess of Cornwall.

Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan’s special day will be held in May but added: "The date of the wedding will be confirmed in due course."

The month of May is filled with other events that Prince Harry and Meghan’s would be keen to avoid a clash with – including Princess Charlotte’s her third birthday on May 2 and local elections.

The Duchess of Cambridge is also due to give birth around that time, so the ginger royal and former Suits star are likely to avoid the early part of the month in case the baby is overdue like Charlotte was in 2015.

A Saturday wedding will break with the royal precedent of a weekday ceremony, but a spokesman for the pair has already revealed Harry and Meghan “want the day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too”.

Prince William and the then-Kate Middleton were married on a Friday, Charles and Diana had a Wednesday wedding and the Queen tied the knot on Thursday – although the Duke of Cornwall’s civil ceremony with Camilla was a Saturday.

Earlier this week, Harry and Meghan's spokesman said: "It means a great deal to them that so many people throughout the UK, the Commonwealth, and around the world are celebrating with them.

Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan’s special day will be held in May

"The couple are delighted to be able to announce that their wedding will be held in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, in May next year.

"As with all members of the royal family, Windsor is a very special place for Prince Harry and he and Markle have regularly spent time there over the last year and a half.

"The couple want the day to be a special, celebratory moment for their friends and family.

"They also want the day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too and are currently working on ideas for how this might be achieved.

"This wedding, like all weddings, will be a moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters of the bride and groom."

It comes as speculation grows about who will in Meghan’s bridal party – with the big question being will the Duchess of Cambridge be a bridesmaid.

Prince Harry acted as best man for his brother William's big day and it has been widely speculated the Duke of Cambridge will return the favour.

And it is thought Prince George and Princess Charlotte will also be involved in the day - earlier this year they acted as pageboy and flower girl for their aunt Pippa Middleton when she married James Matthews.

It is not clear how well Meghan knows Prince Harry’s 35-year-old sister-in-law, but she has previously expressed how “lovely” the Duchess of Cambridge had been to her.

Meghan said Kate has been "wonderful" revealed how she has offered the actress advice for her new life as part of the Royal Family.

Sisters of grooms are often asked to join the wedding party, and as Harry and Kate are close, Meghan could extend the invitation.
