PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: A team of volunteers with the Pune police started 'Project Shaurya' for women's safety in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and rural areas of Maval taluka on Thursday.
The project Shaurya will cover areas from Dehu Road to Khandala apart from the cities. A 14-point safety manual for women's safety and security and a 24x7 helpline, 9146123381, were launched.
DCP Ganesh Shinde said the project will guide girls and women about safety, jobs, transportation and other problems and provide counselling. "If they follow basic security rules they can be safe. Project Shaurya will enhance their security," Shinde said, adding that social media has made personal information public which mischievous elements are taking advantage of.
Project Shaurya is the initiative of Amar Manerikar. He said, "We have a simple 14-point manual after studying women-related crimes. Around 30 lakh copies of the manual will be distributed in schools, colleges, malls, offices, companies, private tuition classes and lectures will be given to create public awareness about safety and security."
Shirley Menezes, project advisor and counselling psychologist, said, "The helpline will aid woman to arrive at a decision of lodging a complaint with professional volunteers' help. A network of four volunteers will be created in each school, college, offices, companies and other places who will help their girl/ women colleagues facing problems."
Later, Shinde replied to college students' queries and guided them about measures to address eve-teasing and other issues.
Speaking to TOI, Manerikar said, "IT professional Pradeep Waghmare has designed a cellphone app of Project Shaurya and it will be launched soon with Google Map connectivity."
