Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp has confirmed an injury to Joel Matip

Liverpool travel to Brighton aiming to close the gap on the top four and boost their chances of securing Champions League football.

And, speaking ahead of the game, Klopp revealed that Matip was out through injury.

"It looks like Joel Matip is out," the German told reporters ahead of the showdown at the Amex Stadium.

"He felt something muscle wise after the last game, we still have to make final assessment.

“Lallana is still building up fitness. Ragnar Klavan was ill.

“Final decisions will be made after the session at 3pm.”

Liveprool are currently 14 points behind table-toppers Manchester City.

And Klopp admitted that Pep Guardiola's men may be too tough to catch.

“We have to win the games, we have no other chance to get to where we want," he added.

“If City keep winning like they do then there is no chance for anybody — but that’s not our problem. We have to focus on Brighton.”

Klopp also praised Brighton for their solid start to the season.

“With clubs we haven’t played before I try to find out more about the city and stuff," he said.

"I watched the video about the Brighton Kop in Brighton, it’s very nice and we’re coming now.

“Brighton is a really, really strong side. A strong group of new signings. They are not a counter attacking side or a long ball side only, but they have quick wingers and skilled players.

"It was an interesting analysis. They’ve had some good results already this season.

“We should expect it will not be easy for us.”
