SHOCK CLAIM: London will join Scotland in call for INDEPENDENCE after Brexit cliffedge

BREXIT will reignite calls for Scotland's independence and push London to break off from the United Kingdom, Scottish historian Sir Tom Devine claimed.

The historian said Brexit will cause the calls for Scottish independence to flare up in order to avoid the "Brexit cliff edge."

He said: "If Brexit happens then the independence debate is very much back on the table and it’s alive again because Brexit would put Scotland towards a potential economic precipice.

"One must think independence may start to be regarded as almost the life built in that context. And then London may join us because a lot of people there voted to remain."

Sir Tom Devine said London may join Scotland to become independent after Brexit

Talking to former First Minister Alex Salmond on his weekly RT show, Sir Tom, however, warned independence after Brexit could be "more difficult" should Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn win the next general election.

He continued: "If Brexit doesn’t happen there might be a difficult, especially if there is a Corbyn victory in the next general election.

"This period of momentous change, if anything, will probably accelerate. And of course, within a few years, we’ll know more about the Scottish constitutional position because the Brexit thing will then resolve for good or for ill."

During the 2016 EU Referendum, Scotland voted in favour of Remain by 62 per cent to 38 per cent. London also voted to stay in the European Union with a pro-EU majority of 59.9 per cent.

It comes after it was revealed that a group of Scottish politicians seek to secure a judicial review to establish whether the UK can unilaterally revoke the EU's Article 50 departure mechanism.

The group has launched a crowdfunded bid to establish whether Britain would be able to overturn the Brexit process.

Ministers have been given a December 12 deadline to respond but the group said the letter is but a first stage in a "proposed judicial review."

But pro-Brexit MSP Oliver Mundell shot down his colleagues, saying: "This is another attempt by the loony Left to overturn the democratic will of the British people.

"It is a complete distraction from securing the best deal for Scotland and rest of the UK.
