Man to die for killing 4 in Joypurhat

A Joypurhat court on Wednesday sentenced a young man to death for killing four people, including his five-year-old son, following a feud over dowry in 2015.

The convict is Sumon Hembram, 33, son of Nabin Hembram of Ratanpur village in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur.

District of Sessions Judge Court of Mamataz Parvin handed down the verdict in the jam-packed courtroom in presence of Sumon, said Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Gokul Chandra Mandal.

According to the prosecution, Sumon used to stay at his in-laws' house in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat. He often tortured his wife Silvia Marandi for dowry.

On June 20 in 2015, he started beating Silvia following an altercation over the issue.

At one stage, Sumon hacked his wife Silvia, son Sunny Hembram, mother-in-law Sandhya Rani, sister-in-law Teresa Marandi and uncle-in-law Markel Marandi.

Of the injured, the four died. The following day, police arrested Sumon from the area, said the APP.

Later, a case was filed with Panchbibi Police Station, accusing Sumon, he said.
