CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government on Thursday named Miss World-2017 Manushi Chhillar as the brand ambassador for its to-be-launched special programme to prevent anaemia among children in the state.

The announcement was made by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar during the maiden visit of Manushi to her home state to attend the International Gita Mahotsav programme in Kurukshetra on the government's invitation.

Pointing out that 61% women in Haryana were found to be anaemic, the CM expressed the hope that involvement of the beauty queen in the programme would help in improving women's health.

Extending support to the "Shakti Project" campaign being carried out by Manushi to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene among girls, the Haryana government announced that the state government would supply free sanitary napkins in all schools to further promote such projects at a cost of Rs 18 crore.

He congratulated Manushi for her achievement as it had brought laurels to the state and the nation at the global level.

In her brief interaction, Manushi said that she was proud that she belonged to Khanpur in Sonipat district, which is known for providing best education to girls in the state.

Manushi added that being a medical student of Khanpur Medial College in Sonipat district, she had a dream of doing something for Haryana girls. She lauded the efforts and initiatives taken by the state government to improve the sex ratio in the state. "On behalf of the mothers, sisters and daughters of the state, I am thankful to the state for such efforts," she added.

When asked whether she will make her career in the medical field or in Bollywood, Manushi said of the five Indian women who had won the Miss World Crown, only two had become actresses.

"The sense of confidence attained after winning the Miss World title helps in achieving whatever we want to do, but it is not necessary to move towards glamour world. I think both a doctor and a Miss World want to do only one thing -- make life comfortable for the world, and I believe being a Miss World and a doctor is the same thing," she said.
