Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide

JALANDHAR: A debt-ridden small farmer, who was also the former sarpanch of his village Saidowal near Nurmahal, committed suicide by consuming poison at his home. He was rushed to doctors and finally taken to the DMCH, Ludhiana, where he breathed his last.

It is learn that Santokh Singh, in his late fifties, was scheduled to meet a money lender on Thursday but he consumed poison in the forenoon before the meeting. Villagers told that the deceased farmer owned less than two-acre land but he was farming after taking land on contract.

"He was hard working farmer and had taken loans to invest in agriculture. After he consumed poison and his kin noticed, they asked him the reason behind the extreme step. He said he owed around Rs 30 lakh to a money lender and that the money lender was pressurizing him to return it," said Kuldeep Singh, the village numberdar.


After being informed by the Ludhiana police, the Goraya police station sent its personnel to the DMCH in the evening to record the statement of his kin. Police officials had not recorded the statement of his kin till the filing of this report.


Kirti Kisan Union district president Santokh Singh Taggar, who also met the villagers and spoke to the deceased farmer's kin, said the debt-ridden farmer was under immense pressure to return the owed amount of Rs 30 lakh.


He is survived by his wife, daughter, and a son who is in Italy.
