Night temp to go up by 2°C due to Ockhi effect

Pune: If you are expecting a dip in temperature with the advent of December, here is a spoiler.

The met department has indicated over a two-degree rise in night temperature during the next couple of days, when it may touch 15 degrees C. The rise is expected in the wake of the high clouds appearing over south Maharashtra due to the effect of very severe cyclonic storm (Ockhi) over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea.

Meanwhile, day temperatures have currently dipped below 30-degrees C due to cloud cover on early Friday morning.

"The cloud cover kept Friday cooler than normal, when day temperature in Shivajinagar dipped to 28.7 degrees C, around 0.6 degrees below normal. Cloud cover inhibits solar radiation from reaching the earth's surface, which translates to cooler day temperatures," a met department official said.

The high clouds may stay for another couple of days, causing the night temperature to rise. Cloud cover in the night traps heat emitted from the earth's surface, preventing it from going into the atmosphere — thus increasing the night-time temperature.

"Ockhi is very likely to intensify further during the next 24 hours, and may continue to move west-northwestwards across Lakshadweep Islands. It is then expected to recurve northeastwards during the subsequent 48 hours. This means that the system may move up to Goa in Konkan. This will cause clouding in the entire south Maharashtra," the official said.

Meanwhile, minimum temperature on Friday was normal in Shivajinagar at 12.7 degrees C, though it was slightly above normal in Lohegaon at 14.8 degrees C.

D S Pai, head, climate prediction, climate research division, IMD, Pune, told TOI that winter this year may still be cooler than last year, which saw average temperatures higher by a degree during the winter season — making it the fourth warmest ever winter season since 1901.

He added that locally too, the western disturbances do not seem to be showing a cooling impact like in the past.
