Lieutenant General Hariz retires after 39-yr service

PUNE: On the final day of his 39 years in service, Lieutenant General P M Hariz paid homage to the martyrs at the National War Memorial in a solemn and emotional ceremony before relinquishing command of the Southern Army on Thursday.

Hariz said he was confident the Army will take on challenges both during peace and war.

A native of Kozhikode in Kerala, Hariz did his schooling from Sainik School, Amravatinagar in Tamil Nadu. He is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy.


On completed his military training from the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun in 1978, he was commissioned into the 12 Mechanised Infantry Battalion. Hariz later commanded the 19 Mechanised Infantry Battalion (recce and support).


General Hariz has attended all mandatory army courses and is on the prestigious Staff Course at Camberly (the United Kingdom), higher command course at the Army War College, Mhow, and the National Defence College in Delhi.


General Hariz has vast experience of serving on prestigious staff, the United Nations and command appointments. Concerned about the welfare of troops, he was responsible for ensuring improved standard of living for all ranks. Veterans' welfare always remained close to his heart, which he pursued passionately and ensured timely payment of financial dues to affected veterans and making ECHS more responsive to their needs.
