NEW DELHI: Congress's Rajya Sabha MP KVP Ramachandra Rao slammed Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu for dropping Indira Gandhi's name from the Polavaram project while "doing nothing" for its progress despite massive cost escalations.
In an open letter to the CM, Rao accused Naidu of putting "avoidable burden" of Rs 30,000 crore on the state by agreeing to partly bear the expenditure on Polavaram dam under pressure from the Centre. He said the UPA government had decided to fund the dam by according it the status of 'national project' in 2014.
Rao said, "The BJP government, on suggestion of Niti Aayog, put the condition that it would bear the project cost only up to April 1, 2014. So, the AP government is supposed to take care of the remaining cost. There are many doubts about how funds will be arranged for the dam project. Naidu has lied to the people about flow of funds."
He said besides Indira Gandhi, Naidu had also betrayed late TDP chief and his father-in-law NT Rama Rao, calling the CM a serial "back stabber".
Objecting to changes in the project's funding, Rao said, "It clearly shows you are scared of speaking against the Centre and want to complete the project with whatever little funds it would release, imposing additional burden on the state."
