Transcript: Report: Trump Urged Top Republicans To Stop Russia Investigation Over The Summer

It seems that over the summer, President Trump asked Senate Republicans to end the investigation into Russia’s 2016 election interference.

Senator and intelligence committee chairman Richard Burr said “It was something along the lines of, ‘I hope you can conclude this as quickly as possible,” according to The New York Times.

Trump then apparently told Senators Mitch McConnell and Roy Blunt to end the investigation swiftly.

Senator and former chairwoman of the intelligence committee Dianne Feinstein said, “It is pressure that should never be brought to bear by an official when the legislative branch is in the process of an investigation.” Despite his alleged comments to end the investigation, neither Blunt or Burr said they felt pressured by the president.

In July, Trump had even left the the option open of firing special counsel Robert Mueller who is leading the investigation into 2016 Russian meddling and is also examining if Trump tried to obstruct justice by firing former FBI director James Comey.
