Ornithology course begins at Garware College on Monday

Pune: Ela Foundation and MES Abasaheb Garware College have announced the 14th certificate course in basic ornithology from Monday.

The course running into 40 lectures at AV Hall of Garware College is imparted on a no-profit no-loss principle, is conducted every Monday and Thursday between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.


Satish Pande, director of Ela foundation, said India's only such interactive course includes over 40 PowerPoint lectures, films and field visits. The subjects cover conservation of birds that provide ecological services and are indicators of the health of our environment.


Some topics include fundamentals of bird anatomy, physiology and classification, avian adaptations for aerial mode of life, bird flight, migration, feeding, breeding, habitats, ethno-biology, evolution, archaeo-zoology, birds as architects, photography,bird behaviour, bird sounds, bird flu, first aid for birds, ecological role of birds, bird conservation, role of journalism in ornithology, successful bird conservation stories, bird quiz, he said.


The course is timed with the winter migration of birds that have started arriving. Participants are taken to the field under expert guidance for habitat and bird watching to experience and understand how birds are studied and data is collected.
