PUNE: The city witnessed a marginal rise of 1.14% in overall crime during 2016, according to the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) 2016 report which was released on Thursday. The number of overall crimes went up from 19,332 cases in 2015 to 19,554 cases in 2016.
The city's crime rate, which is calculated as crimes per one lakh population, was 387.2 in 2016. These crimes included offences under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as those under special legislative laws (SLLs) such as Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Information Technology Act and Juvenile Justice Act, among others.
Incidentally, in 2015, the city had witnessed a 12.47% dip in the overall crime as against the 22,084 cases in 2014.
However, the city showed a 5.99% increase in IPC crimes - from 15,349 in 2015 to 16,296 in 2016. In 2014, as many as 14,468 IPC crimes were recorded in the city. Offences under SLLs reduced from 3,983 in 2015 to 3,258 in 2016. In 2014, the SLLs offences were at a high of 7,616.
Pune ranked third among the 19 metropolitan cities in terms of rape cases, with 354 such incidences recorded in 2016. Delhi with 1,996 cases headed the table while Mumbai was next with 712. A total 4,935 rape cases were recorded by all 19 metropolitan cities.
Delhi continued to be the country's crime capital in 2016 for incidences registered under the IPC in 19 metropolitan cities having a population of more than 20 lakh. Delhi was followed by Bengaluru and Mumbai. Mumbai had held the second slot for the previous two years. Delhi had nearly four times as many cases as Bengaluru and five times more than Mumbai.
In terms of overall incidences (IPC, SLLs and others), Pune stood 11th among the 19 metropolitan cities.
Cybercrime cases see quantum jump
Delhi again topped the table in terms of overall incidences (IPC, SLLs and others), followed by Chennai and Mumbai. In terms of crime rate, Pune stood 15th among metropolitan cities having a population of more than 20 lakh.
On sexual offences against children, which are registered under the POCSO Act, Pune city ranked 3rd among the 19 metropolitan cities with 351 cases in 2016. Delhi again recorded the highest such cases at 1,374 and Mumbai was next with 979. Overall, 4,473 cases under the Act were recorded by the 19 metropolitan cities.
Cybercrimes in the city, which are registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act, witnessed a quantum jump to 269 cases in 2016 as against 85 cases the earlier year. This represented an almost 250% increase in cases.
In 2014, a total 140 cybercrime cases were reported.
Economic offences including cheating, criminal breach of trust and misappropriation, among others, were recorded at 1,109 in 2016 as against 907 in 2015, representing an 18.22% increase. In 2014, a total 862 economic offences were registered in the city.
In the category of body offences, the city recorded 130 cases of murder in 2016 as against 125 such cases in 2015 and 138 in 2014.
