MARGAO: A day after the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) addressed the media about its plans for solid waste management for the town, a rival group led by Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias addressed mediapersons on Friday to state that the garbage treatment plant managed by the CMC was in, a "total mess".
Significantly, convenor of Cuncolim citizens action front, Tarachand Dessai, demanded, in the presence of Dias, that the chief officer (CO) of CMC, Shankar Gaonkar be ousted from the municipality for having "insulted" Dias during his visit to the garbage treatment plant.
Dessai pointed out that Gaonkar refused to open the gate of the garbage treatment plant to allow Dias to inspect the facility, "Thereby insulting the people of Cuncolim who have elected (Dias) as their representative." Dessai went on to given an ultimatum to the authorities to remove Gaonkar within one month.
"We don't want this chief officer who is insulting Cuncolkars. We demand that he be transferred or else we will drive him out," Dessai said.
While addressing mediapersons, Dias also expressed disapproval over Gaonkar's behavior during the visit to the garbage treatment plant.
"Despite having made it known in advance to the chief officer that I would be inspecting the garbage treatment plant on November 27 at 10.30am along with officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board , neither the chief officer nor the chairperson were present at the time. When the chief officer finally arrived, he declined to open the gate saying that he needed orders from the chairperson. This was inappropriate behavior on the part of the CO, and I demand that action be taken against him for putting the people of Cuncolim to shame," he said.
