GURGAON: A workshop to spread awareness among farmers about a new state government scheme, Peri Urban Agriculture, under which farmers will be encouraged to grow their own produce and sell directly to consumers, was held in Gurgaon on Wednesday and Thursday.
The scheme aims to cater to the daily consumption needs of 4 crore residents of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad by making farms and markets in Haryana the main source of the produce. The state government has decided to develop NCR Haryana as a hub for fresh fish, milk, vegetables, fruits and floriculture to be supplied to Delhi. Haryana is well connected with Delhi by both road and rail.
The concept is based on the lines of the Beijing market where basic food produce is procured from nearby towns. In case of Delhi, nearly 15 thousand metric tonnes of fruits are brought to the city every day from far-off states like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. According to estimates, Haryana can do a daily business of nearly Rs 75 crore with Delhi. It's a win-win situation as Delhi will get fresh produce. Under the scheme, Haryana farmers will market their own produce. This way, there will be no middle man to exploit the farmers, hoard the stock or overcharge. The government too will buy produce from them and sell it.
There are plans to open an agri-business school in Gurgaon where farmers will be trained in dairy, farming, fisheries, and horticulture production as well as marketing. They will be trained to operate their business through smartphones. The government will help farmers to start their business, find consumers and form a supply chain. Now people are more inclined towards organic produce, so farming patterns on the same lines will be encouraged. There are plans to choose villages in NCR where only organic farming will be done.
Om Prakash Dhankar, agriculture minister, Haryana, said, "We have established a network of rail and road routes connecting Haryana to Delhi. The agriculture department will help farmers in packaging and marketing. Delhi wants fresh produce and it has a crush on Haryana for the same."
