Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah doubts admitted by Phil Thompson ahead of Brighton clash

PHIL THOMPSON has admitted he had doubts about Mohamed Salah when Liverpool signed him back in the summer.

Liverpool signed Salah from Roma for a fee of £34million back in June with the Egypt international going on to enjoy a stunning start to his Anfield career.

Salah is currently the Premier League’s top scorer, netting 12 times to sit above the likes of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

His performances have left many stunned with the player previously struggling at Chelsea during a torrid spell at Stamford Bridge.

And Thompson has admitted he had his doubts about Salah - but says the 25-year-old has proved him wrong after his blistering start to the season.

"He's been a revelation," Thompson told Sky Sports of the Liverpool star.

"Dare I say it when we were signing him in the summer I was thinking, 'I've seen this player at Chelsea and he didn't pull up any trees for Chelsea'.

"He didn't have many games and I think he scored two goals in about 13 matches and I thought, 'he didn't even look a player'."

Thompson also thinks Salah is Liverpool’s answer to Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

"When he was at Roma, I looked at the stats of the player and thought, 'it's not just the goals he scores but the assists that he made'," Thompson added.

"That was one of the big things for Kevin De Bruyne when he went to Wolfsburg.

Liverpool news: Phil Thompson had doubts about Mohamed Salah

“He scored quite a few goals there but his assists were quite incredible and by far the best in Germany.

“That made me think, 'he's got something in his locker'.

"That's what I was looking for with Mo Salah before he came to Liverpool.

“I thought, 'if he can reproduce that he's got to have something in him to unlock defences', which is what Liverpool need against packed defences and he has been an absolute star."

Salah is next in action for Liverpool against Brighton tomorrow (3pm).
