Nagpur: The transport committee of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to operate only midi city buses through Mahal. The move came after a protest by members of BJP Yuva Morcha on Friday following a minor accident involving a standard size city bus at Gandhi Gate on Thursday.
More than 60 Yuva Morcha workers staged demonstrations near the Gate and blocked traffic to demand immediate action over the issue. The demonstration which lasted for around an hour affected hundreds of commuters.
Currently, around 25 standard and over 50 medium size buses plying on Pardi, Sitabuldi, Medical Square and other routes pass through Mahal. Transport committee chairman Bunty Kukde, who met the protesters, later told TOI that starting from Friday, only midi or mini buses will be allowed through Mahal. "Necessary adjustments will be made in routes and schedule of buses," he said.
Corporator from Prabhag 17 Pramod Chikhale told TOI that buses on every major route pass through the congested Mahal area. "Most of the roads here are single lane and the standard size buses occupy most part of the road, creating traffic bottleneck for most part of the day."
He added that several letters and requests had been sent to the civic administration over the issue. "In the past, we also spoke to senior officials in this regard but to no avail. Finally, we took to the streets to highlight the issue."
Speaking about the accident that took place on Thursday, Chikhale said that an elderly person was injured in the leg after being hit by a city bus near Gandhi Gate. "The injured person is undergoing treatment at a hospital," he said.
