BHUBANESWAR: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on November 22 directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 1000 each to 161 tribal girl students of Bhaluguda Sevashram in Malkangiri district for not giving them enough food and adequate standard of living.
The girls had left the hostel, run by the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes department, on November 25, 2013 complaining that the hostel did not give them sufficient food. The copy of the NHRC order was made available online on Thursday.
"Non-availability of proper food and denial of adequate standard of living in Bhaluguda Sevashram, Malkangiri, has violated the right to life and it is a grave violation of human rights of 161 girl students of government-run hostel for tribal girls and therefore, the Commission recommends a sum of Rs. 1000," the commission said it in its order.
Hearing a petition by rights campaigner Subash Mohapatra, the commission asked chief secretary (AP Padhi) to submit compliance report along with proof of payment of Rs 1,61,000 within six weeks.
The government had earlier apprised the commission that curative measures were alrady taken to enhance the quality of food and other hostel management aspects. The government had also taken disciplinary against the head Sevika who was found guilty of inaction and had transferred the erring teachers.
