Mthatha – An unknown, "balaclava-clad" gunman shot a 32-year-old traditional nurse dead and wounded two others at a circumcision school in Mthatha, police said on Friday.

The traditional nurse would take care of initiates after they are circumcised.

Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the incident took place on Thursday evening at Lower Mjika in Tsolo, near Mthatha.

"The initiates that were inside the school were not hurt during the shooting and, at this stage, no arrest has been made," said Fatyela.

He said the motive for the shooting was also not known.
