Strengthening primary healthcare is the need of the hour to make quality healthcare available for all, said Dr JC Passey, medical director of the Delhi government's Lok Nayak hospital.

Speaking on the 3rd edition of Mail Today Healthcare Conclave on Tuesday, Jassey said: "Lok Nayak hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals of the Delhi government, caters to 7,000 OPD patients and 2,000 casualty ward patients each day.

Therefore, we have to check who among them should visit tertiary care hospitals, who should visit mohalla clinics and who need to further their treatment through polyclinics."

"Right now, what we see is that there is complete reluctance on part of our young doctors to be posted at rural centres. Therefore, there is need to give some incentives so that doctors and paramedics do not dither. This, in turn, strengthens primary health institutions such as pediatric heathcare, geriatric healthcare and rehabilitative treatment," Passey added.
