Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, in collaboration with Virgin Hyperloop One, is all set to start a pre-feasibility study of the proposed Hyperloop route project between Pune and Mumbai. The report is to be submitted to the state government by mid-January.

A cutting-edge mode of transport, Hyperloop carries passengers and freight in pods via electro magnetic propulsion through a low-pressure tube. A special workshop to study traffic figures and flow pattern will be held in the city on December 10. The workshop will be attended by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, Public Works Department, the National Highways Authority of India, Regional Transport Office, Railways and Airport authorities, officials said.

The preliminary study is intended to analyse the benefits of Hyperloop technology, identify high priority routes and socio-economic benefits.

"A detailed report is to be presented to the government in six weeks, and the workshop is part of the study," said PMRDA chief Kiran Gitte. Hyperloop will directly connect the proposed airport at Purandar to the Navi Mumbai and Mumbai airports.

While some transporters' groups have expressed apprehension over the project, considering the huge cost involved, Gitte said, if found feasible, the travel time will be reduced to 14 minutes from the present two-and-a-half hours.
