PANAJI: In the recent minor girl abuse case reported from Porvorim, police are investigating the role played by a lawyer from Mapusa and a doctor attached to a hospital in Bardez.

Police suspect that the 80-year-old doctor allegedly issued a fake birth certificate, while the lawyer allegedly forged documents.

The alleged illegalities came to light after women's police station at Panaji rescued a five-year-old child last Wednesday. The victim was being ill-treated by the woman in whose house she was living and investigation revealed that minor had been left behind with the accused, a tuition teacher in Porvorim, by the parents.

Police said the couple — an India-origin couple working in the UK — 'got' the child as a newborn using forged documents, but initially left her with a relative while going abroad. After the relative complained about the child, they entrusted her in the tuition teacher's custody. Earlier, the parent's had sent the child to the same teacher in a bid to inculcate discipline.

The complaint was lodged by advocate Emidio Pinho of victims' assistance unit (VAU), Panaji.

PI Sudiksha Naik of the women's police station told TOI that, in 2005, the same couple had adopted a girl, but she was withdrawn from their custody following complaints of sexual assault.

Naik said the doctor was questioned, but he was evasive and "his replies were not logical". "Considering his age", police cannot be harsh with him, she added.

The lawyer, she said, has moved for anticipatory bail and police are yet to speak with the parents. "There is no clarity about their (parents' nationality). They may be Portuguese passport holders," Naik said, adding that they will be writing to the Portuguese embassy seeking details of their nationality.

"The tuition teacher is a mother of three and two of her children are minors," Naik said, adding that police haven't met her husband as he allegedly works in Bahrain.

The teacher and aunt have got anticipatory bail.
