KHARTOUM, 1st December, 2017 (WAM) -- Omar Al Bashir, President of Sudan, has extended his greetings to the UAE on its 46th National Day anniversary while praising its development projects in North Sudan, to provide shelter and settle the people affected by natural calamities.

On the UAE's Commemoration Day, President Al Bashir also saluted the sacrifice of Emirati and Sudanese martyrs.

He made his statement during a ceremony, held on Thursday, in Aroma District in Kasala State, Sudan, to inaugurate 1,200 residential units built by the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, for local people affected by floods in the area. The ERC also organised a mass wedding for 204 couples, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC.

President Al Bashir applauded the humanitarian initiatives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

He also lauded the ERC's efforts, under the stewardship of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed.

"These projects are an extension of the process of giving in Sudan, which was started by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, with numerous key development projects, including the 600-kilometre Haya-Port Sudan Highway and many other projects," he added.

President Al Bashir and members of the visiting ERC delegation, headed by Dr. Mohammed Atiq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of the ERC, along with Hamad Mohammed Al Junaibi, UAE Ambassador to Sudan, attended a mass wedding, which was organised as part of the ERC's initiatives to facilitate marriage among the local youth.

Ambassador Al Junaibi conveyed the greetings of the UAE leadership to President Al Bashir and to the brotherly people of Sudan.

Dr. Al Falahi said that the mass wedding is part of an initiative, patronised by Sheikh Hamdan, to support Arab youth and help them lead a happy and settled family life. He referred to similar mass weddings organised by the ERC in Iraq, Yemen, Bahrain and the Syrian refugee camps in Jordan.

He congratulated, on behalf of Sheikh Hamdan, the newlyweds and wished them a happy marital life.

Adam Jama'a Adam, Governor of Kasala State, thanked Sheikh Hamdan for the initiative, which reflects the deep-rooted ties between the UAE and Sudan. He also commended the ERC's efforts to help the people affected by floods that hit the state last year.
