PATNA: Over 200 paramedical students of different medical colleges of the state staged a protest at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital here on Thursday, demanding constitution of a paramedical council to address various issues being faced by them, such as delay in examinations and lack of hostel facility.
The protestors also held exam controller for paramedical courses Dr Prabhat Kumar hostage for almost an hour.
Members of the Paramedical Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti initially started a rally from Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). However, on the request of police, they ended the rally and assembled on the premises of NMCH. "When the officials of NMCH ignored their pleas, the protesters held exam controller hostage. Later, he was freed by the police. The students withdrew the agaitation following police intervention," said a source.
Nand Kishore, a 2014-16 batch student of diploma in medical lab technology, PMCH, said their first annual examination was held in February 2016 instead of 2015. "We don't know when they will conduct the final year examination. We have already lost two precious years for the delay," he added.
Another protester said classes are not being held in a systematic manner and teachers remain absent on most of the days. "The condition of government medical colleges in the state is very bad. Seeing our seniors' plight, we are in a catch-22 situation," said a first year paramedical student of PMCH, adding they have no idea when their examination will be conducted.
"In private colleges, examinations are held on time and students get the necessary facilities. We don't know why the government is playing with our future," said another protester.
Exam controller Dr Prabhat Kumar said a special examination for the paramedical students will be conducted in February to end all backlogs. "We will also request the government to give stipend money to the students besides providing them hostel facilities," he added.
