BHUBANESWAR: The Telangana government announced its support for the Odisha government on the Polavaram issue which is being implemented in Andhra Pradesh.
Telangana deputy chief minister Kadiyam Srihari, who met Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat on Friday said, "As far as Polavaram is concerned, we are with the Odisha government."
Though the chief minister's office here termed the meeting a 'courtesy call', sources said both the leaders discussed the Polavaram issue at length.
"I came here to call on the Odisha chief minister here. During the discussion he (Naveen) have me a note on Polavaram and requested our government and chief minister to extend our support on the stand taken by the state government on Polavaram," Srihari said.
Asked about the stand of Telangana government on the project, Srihari said they have already made their stand clear on the issue since Telangana is equally loser on Polavaram.
The state government has been vehemently opposing the controversial project as the project, in its current design, would submerge 25 habitations in Motu tehsil in Malkangiri district and inundate around 7656 hectares of agriculture and forest land. Chhattisgarh is also against the project besides Odisha and Telangana.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to allow its construction. He had also opposed the project at the inter-state council meet held in New Delhi last week.
An original petition filed by the Odisha government in the Supreme Court in 2007 opposing the project and clearances given to it is also sub-judice.
