Two of the three lanes on the A1(M) in Yorkshire have been shut and traffic is being held as emergency services work to rescue a trapped driver.

The incident left a lorry hanging over the edge of a bridge.

West Yorkshire Police were unable to give any further details.

A number of collisions have already been reported as snowfall through the night, coupled with freezing temperatures affected the region’s roads

Police in North Yorkshire said they had dealt with 66 road traffic accidents overnight.

Highways England reported that two lanes were blocked on the A1 northbound within junction 44 due to a collision between multiple vehicles.

A spokesperson said: “Emergency services at scene, please take care on approach, delays are building."

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning for ice which remains in the place across the region until 10am.

On its website, the Met Office states: "Icy stretches are affecting some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths or where showers have caused wash off on treated roads."

Durham Police has also issued a warning to stay safe behind the wheel.

They tweeted: "Snow and ice are affecting County Durham and Darlington this morning making driving hazardous, de-ice those windscreens, allow extra time for your journey, drive carefully everyone."

Six lorries were also involved in a smash on the M1 causing traffic chaos this morning.

The incident took place on the northbound carriageway between junctions 29a and 30 in Derbyshire just after 6am.

Officials closed the busy motorway from junction 29 northbound while emergency services worked to clear the carriageway.

Derbyshire Police warned rush hour drivers of "significant tailbacks" and 50-minute delays.
