GAYA: An apparently abusive and threatening Facebook post by Magadh University employee union general secretary Amarnath Pathak against vice-chancellor Prof Qamar Ahsan and registrar Nalin Kumar Shastri played spoilsport as talks held between university officials and leaders of agitating staff failed on Tuesday evening. The FB post went viral in university circles.
Nearly 600 employees of the Magadh University (MU) headquarters have been on strike since November 17 demanding appointments on compassionate ground and promotional benefits.
Pathak, in his Facebook post, also dared the officials to stop playing hide and seek and come forward for a one-to-one fight with union leaders.
Pro-VC K N Paswan, who headed the official negotiating team, attributed the failure to the 'stubbornness' of the union leaders. While skipping the FB post issue, Paswan said they insisted on the service regularization of daily wage and contractual employees. Ruling out the regularization of such employees, Paswan said the appointments were made in a whimsical manner in violation of all rules.
On the question of compassionate ground appointments, the pro-VC reiterated the stand that those found eligible for appointment on compassionate ground as per government rules and court directives would be appointed. No wholesale appointment on compassionate ground is possible, he said. The designated committee would meet on December 15 to consider the matter, he said.
In respect of promotion, Paswan said the ongoing strike has hampered the process and if the establishment section was allowed to function, the university would meet the December 23 deadline given by the VC. A written test, as required by rules, would be held to judge the ability of promotion aspirants, he said.
According to university sources, the VC has taken serious note of Pathak's abusive and threatening FB post. Sources also say a criminal case was likely to be instituted against him under relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act.
Meanwhile, Gaya MP Hari Manjhi, who earlier offered to mediate between the striking employees and university authorities, pulled out in the wake of the latest murky developments.
