Jalandhar: Cracking down on illegal marriage palaces under its jurisdiction, the Jalandhar Development Authority has announced that it would start the process of sealing illegal marriage palaces after December 31.
Presiding over a meeting to review the registration of marriage palaces here on Tuesday, JDA chief administrator Girish Dayalan said 22 marriage palaces have already been sealed by the authority for violating the norms. He said of the 194 marriage palace owners who had applied for regularization, 61 were from Jalandhar, 78 from Kapurthala and 55 from Hoshiarpur.
"Out of these, 11 cases have been rejected, 10 have been passed and remaining 173 are under consideration. These would be deemed illegal until final clearance," he said.
The chief administrator said it was mandatory for all marriage palaces to get regularization certificate by December 31, 2017, else these properties would be sealed. After December 31, the authority would ask other departments including excise and taxation, urban local bodies and others, not to issue any permits for holding functions at unauthorized places.
He said illegal marriage palace owners could also be prosecuted and could face imprisonment from three to seven years under various provisions of the law.
Dayalan said the JDA has uploaded details of all regularized and illegal marriage palaces on its website. He urged the people to only book regularized marriage palaces for a smooth conduct of their functions and avoiding any inconvenience in future. He also asked the officer of various departments present in the meeting to expedite the process of issuing NOCs from their respective departments at the earliest.
