Nintendo Switch games console to topple Sony’s PS4 sales crown?

THE NINTENDO Switch games console has been predicted to match one of the most successful devices ever for sales, putting it on a direct course to match Sony’s PS4 gaming dominance.

Nintendo Switch games consoles are being predicted to continue selling well

While it’s still unclear just how many PlayStation 4 consoles will be sold, it’s still very much the gaming machine to match right now, with both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One currently trailing.

Having sold more than 67 million units so far, it appears that the PS4 and PS4 Pro are well on course to at least match what the PS3 achieved.

It’s even possible that the Sony’s latest console will beat the PS3 for sales, which would mean selling more than 83 million units.

But it could be getting some tough competition when it comes to the lifetimes sales chart.

More analysts are now suggesting that the Nintendo Switch games console could match the Wii for sales.

That would mean achieving over 100 million in its lifecycle, which only began this year.

NASDAQ reports that Morningstar, an investment research and investment management firm, now believes the Nintendo Switch could even surpass this number and achieve around 110m.

That would put it behind the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color handheld in terms of lifetime sales.

Here’s the reasoning behind Morningstar’s change of heart, who had pegged the console for around 80m not so long ago:

1) Nintendo has succeeded in expanding its production capacity, and is now able to deliver more Switch consoles for the holiday season;

2) more third-party software will be launched next year, which will accelerate the Switch's shipment momentum;

3) We expect to see more than one Switch terminal per household. As a result, we expect that this gaming cycle will be larger than most of Nintendo's previous hardware cycles, replicating the success of the Nintendo Wii, which shipped 102 million units.

“As a result, we revise our operating income forecast from JPY 110 billion to JPY 140 billion for fiscal 2018 (fiscal year ending March 2018), and from JPY 325 billion to JPY 420 billion for fiscal 2020.”

Could the PS4 reach 110m units sold? The good news for Sony is that analysts believe that the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X will extend the current console generation by at least two years.

And another two years would help add a good many PS4 console sales, although 110m may be a little too optimistic a target.

There's also the questions of just how long Microsoft and Sony are planning to leave it before they launch their new console generation, which could include a new PS5 and Xbox Two going head-to-head, while the Switch continues its impressive sales cycle.
