Woman’s body snatched from pyre as locals suspect husband of murder

A man suspected of killing his wife was stopped short from burning her body at the crematorium when his neighbours intervened and informed police. The incident took place in Outer Delhi’s Narela area on Monday morning.

Police said that they have detained husband of the deceased for questioning. Till the time, the girl’s family does not come, the post mortem will not take place.

High drama unfolded at the Narela-based Devi wale road crematorium on Monday morning when locals stopped a man from consigning his wife’s body to flame.

Suspecting that Kanhaiya killed his 21-year-old Neelam, one of them made a call to the police.

A team of Narela police reached the scene and the Sub Divisional Magistrate, along with the crematorium head, was called in and the body was taken out of the pyre. A senior police officer said that they have sent the body of the woman to the Babu Jag Jivan Ram hospital mortuary.

“Locals said that they heard Kanhaiya and Neelam fighting in their rented accommodation in Pocket A6. The couple have been married for two years and have a one year old son.

Kanhaiya was heading towards the crematorium with his three to four friends. The locals suspected something was amiss. They followed him and stopped him from burning the body.”

Police said that they have informed parents of Neelam who live in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Till the time the woman’s family comes down, the post mortem examination will not be conducted.

Police added that the post mortem will likely be held on Tuesday. Based on their allegations and counter allegations, the Sub Divisional Magistrate will take action accordingly. So far, no FIR has been registered in the matter.
