Good spell forecast for Tirunelveli, Theni, Kanniyakumari

Many parts of South Tamil Nadu may have another round of fairly widespread rainfall till Friday. This may be heavy to very heavy spells in a few places of southern districts, according to the Meteorological Department.

The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal crossed Sri Lanka Coast and lies nearly 360 km east southeast of Kanniyakumari. The system is very likely to move and emerge into Comorin area and intensify into a deep depression by Thursday.

Under its influence, S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said south Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli, Sivaganga, Theni and Kanniyakumari, would experience good spell of rains.

There are chances for one or two places in delta districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam to get heavy rainfall up to 12 cm. “This system would mainly have a greater impact on south Tamil Nadu. But, some places in north Tamil Nadu may get moderate showers up to 4 cm of rainfall. “Those in north interior districts such as Coimbatore and Erode have less chance of rainfall,” he said.

Chennaiites too may have to be prepared for sharp spells of rains for two more days. While the sky would remain cloudy, some areas may experience moderate rainfall till Friday.

The prevailing rain spell has brought down the State’s deficit to 17 %.

Meanwhile, the department is also monitoring another weather system forming over Malay Peninsula that could intensify into depression in two days.
