Bangladeshi archer Abul Kashem Mamun's dream run in the 20th Asian Archery Championships came to an end at the hands of eventual gold-medal winner Abhishek Verma of India yesterday.

The 25-year-old from Narail went down by 141-148 points in the quarterfinals of the individual men's compound as the Indian archer marched on to claim the gold medal.

Amid strong wind in the morning session at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Mamun needed to display his best, but he failed to transfer previous day's performance from the beginning and trailed by five points after the first two sets. He never recovered from that position despite putting up a bold performance in the last three sets.

The Asian Games silver medallist Verma, who was not at his best on Tuesday, put up a tremendous show to score 148 out of 150 as the inexperienced Mamun had no to reply.

“It is our standard and I am happy with what I have done today [Wednesday],” Mamun said. “I could not cope with the strong wind in the morning. Besides, experience was also an issue.”

“Psychology plays a big role in compound event and it is tough to come back if anyone falls behind in the beginning,” the 25-year-old said. “I tried to come back in the latter stage but that was not enough to beat Verma, who I must admit played really really well.”

Mamun, however, believes the compound archers of Bangladesh have potential to grow but they need improved training either at home or aboard.

“We have scored 333 out of 360 in compound event without practice and it is possible to score 350 which world-class archers do at international level, but we need training under good coaches to fine-tune our shots,” Mamun said.

Verma, meanwhile, went on to beat South Korea's Kim Jongho in an exciting final which rolled into shoot-off. The shoot-off also ended in a 10-10 tie, but Verma was more close to the blue-eyed point than Jongho and was adjudged the winner.

The other three gold medals of the day went to South Korea, who raised their gold tally to five after winning gold in men's recurve, women's recurve and women's compound events.

Lee Seungyun, the Olympic gold medallist in mixed recurve team, beat Japan's Kawata Yuki 6-0 to win gold. Lee Eun Gyeong followed her teammate to win gold in women's recurve event beating teammate Choi Minson 6-5 while in women's compound event, Song Yun Soo beat teammate Choi Bomin 141-140 to win gold.
