‘Accused likely to hamper probe’

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday opposed the bail plea of meat exporter Moin Qureshi in a money-laundering case.

In a written submission filed before Special Judge Arun Bharadwaj, the Directorate said the accused should not be granted bail as the offences committed by him were serious in nature.

‘ Custody unwarranted’

Making the submission for the probe agency, Special Public Prosecutor N.K. Matta said the accused was likely to hamper the probe if he was enlarged on bail. Later, the court scheduled the bail application for Thursday for argument.

The accused, in his application, submitted that the investigating agency had wrapped up its probe and hence his custody was unwarranted.

Last month, the Directorate filed a complaint against Qureshi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act alleging that he had extorted ₹7.5 crore from two businessmen, Pradeep Koneru and Satish Sana, using the names of former CBI directors, promising to help them in the CBI cases against them. The Directorate said witnesses had confirmed that they had delivered crores of rupees to Qureshi and his associates through his employees.

Qureshi was also involved in hawala transactions through Delhi-based hawala operators for transferring money to Dubai and then to Paris, London, the U.S., Hong Kong, Italy and Switzerland, the ED alleged. He also extorted crores of rupees from a Hyderabad-based businessman, it charged. He was arrested by the ED in August.
