Hart was way out of his goal when Rooney ran onto the ball and went for goal.

Everton were already two up at the time thanks to Rooney.

The ball sailed into the net to complete the former England captain's hat-trick.

Ashley Williams then scored as Everton ran riot in front of new manager Sam Allardyce, eventually winning 4-0.

And former Leicester player Savage, co-commentating for BT Sport, likened Rooney's third goal to David Beckham’s famous strike against Wimbledon in 1996.

“I think that’s better than David Beckham’s goal for Manchester United,” Savage said.

“It had power and pace.”

Rooney was eventually subbed off in order to receive a warm applause from the Everton faithful.

David Unsworth, on his final game in charge as caretaker manager, said: "It’s a great night, not for me but for the club. Every player was committed.

"I asked them to be men tonight. If you can stand up there and fight in times of trouble, that says a lot.

"Great hat-trick, great display from Wayne. He was captain for a reason. I’m delighted for the club. I took over when we were in the bottom three and we’ve got out of it in the six weeks.”

On the wonder goal, BBC pundit and former Everton player Leon Osman said: “Hart comes well out of his box to clear the ball and, without missing a stride, Rooney connects with it and sends it straight over the defenders into the empty goal.

“When the ball comes to you that far out, the first thought for 99% of players in the Premier League is to take a touch.

“Not Wayne Rooney, he hits it in a split second and what a goal to complete the hat-trick.”

And some of Rooney’s team-mates reacted to the goal on social media.

Ross Barkley tweeted: “Not many in world football who could do that.”

And Yannick Bolasie wrote: “Nah @WayneRooney is on some joke ting.”
