DEEN DAYAL UPADHYAYA NAGAR (Chandauli): Elections for DDU Palika Parishad, formerly known as Mughalsarai Palika Parishad, witnessed a good turnout as long queues were seen from morning till end of voting on Wednesday.

People voted with enthusiasm, with the expectation that the new municipal board will end open defecation, mosquito menace and open drains carrying sewage in densely-populated localities.

The historic township wore a festive mood since morning. Queues formed at 29 polling stations of Palika Parishad area with 75,200 voters in the morning and remained till the end of poll hours. While electors were deciding the fate of 10 candidates for chairman and 185 candidates for corporators, district magistrate Hemant Kumar, SP Santosh Kumar Singh and police kept a vigil.

Polling for Nagar Panchayats of Chandauli, Chakia and Saiyyedraja townships, which have less than 17,000 voters each, in the district also took place.

After casting vote, Mohd Munnu and Mohd Naseem Khan said, "More than 75% households in localities like Kasab Mohal, Shahkuti, Kalimohal and Muslim Mohal lack toilets."

Maximum 70% polling was recorded in Chakia and Saiyyedraja Nagar Panchayats each, while 63% polling took place for DDU-NPP.

The polling in Chandauli Nagar Panchayat remained below 60%. Giving these figures after the end of polling hours, district election officer Hemant Kumar said that final figures will be announced after cross checking the data of each ward of four urban local bodies of the district on Thursday morning.
