Outcry over delay in executing probe report

3 Years Into Journo Jaglul's DeathThe speakers attending the 3rd death anniversary of eminent journalist Jaglul Haider Chowdhury, expressed their dissatisfaction over the government's negligence on implementing the probe report submitted to the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry regarding the road accident that claimed Jaglul's life in 2014.
At the same time, the Jaglul Haider Chowdhury Memorial Trust (JHCMT) has officially announced to distribute award on overseas journalism in the name of the deceased journalist.
The announcement was made at a discussion meeting organized by Journalist Jaglul Haider Chowdhury Memorial Trust (JHCMT) to recall his memories, who had served the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) as its Chief Editor and Managing Director (MD).
Jaglul Haider's childhood friend and Food Minister Qamrul Islam initiated the trust on the memory of his friend while his family members, friends and junior colleagues also assisted him.
Jaglul died in an accident taken place at the Karwan Bazar circle on November 29, 2014. After his death, the Road Transport Ministry formed a probe body but, its recommendations are yet to be implemented.
Recalling the memories of Jaglul Haider, Qamrul Islam said, he was a friendly and cordial person to his friends and colleagues. He, a progressive personality, used to help the poor with the best of his abilities.
Although Jaglul was from a renowned family and the son of a minister, he never displayed the slightest of arrogance. Rather, he was humble and polite to everyone, Qamrul, who chaired the meeting, added.
Qamrul announced that the trust will provide two or more awards every year for journalists working in diplomatic assignments or overseas in order to inspire them to practice ethical and accurate journalism.
The awards of this year will be given within the next three to four months. The award will be given on the occasion of his death anniversary. Jaglul's articles published in different newspapers would also be published as a book soon. A fund is being prepared for it, he added.
While speaking as chief guest, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said that Jaglul was the first reporter who mentioned my name in his reports as a students' leader and published in the newspapers. After that i reminded him several times about his journalistic contributions in making me today's Tofail Ahmed.
"He was a humble and a credible journalist. The journalist community would feel his absence forever. The journalists of next generations should follow Jaglul's ideology and engage in practicing ethical and responsible journalism to protect the dignity of the community," he added.
Press Club President Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, Vice President Bangladesh News's Editor Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shymal Dutta, Press Club's former General Secretary Swapan Saha, Dainik Sangbad Editor Khandker Muniruzzaman, Banglabazar Patrika Editor Zakaria Khan, Banani Society President Shawkat Ali Bhuiyan, his brothers and cousins Rokon Chowdhury, Ashfaq Chowdhury, Shahid Chowdhury and Helena Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
