The programme, Onnichonnai, to begin with lamp-lit procession today

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)’s South Urban Resource Centre (URC) at the Sathram school, Fort, will observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a host of programmes on Thursday. The Day is observed around the world on December 3.

The programme titled Onnichonnai will see nearly 100 differently abled children take part in art and cultural events. The programme is aimed at ensuring the support of society for these children.

The programme will begin with a lamp-lit procession from the house of differently abled student Ananthu at Mukkolakkal, near Eenchakkal, at 9.30 a.m.

It will be led by Sreevarahom ward councillor Mini R. The procession will be received at the URC by Manacaud ward councillor S. Suresh.

The participating children will be divided into four groups. Four corners will be set up for them with activities such as ringing a gift, balloon bursting, painting, and basketball in each corner. The groups of children, small kits in hand, will visit each corner, take part in the activities, and bag prizes which they can put in their kit.

Gifts for all

There will be group activities too. All will be given gifts. An hour-long cultural programme will be held in which 10 students of the block resource centre (BRC) will present aerobics.

The valedictory at 3 p.m. at the Sathram school will be inaugurated by Corporation Education standing committee chairperson S. Unnikrishnan.

The chief guest will be Devesh Mahadev, a differently abled person who is a bank officer at the State Bank of India, Karikode branch, Kollam.

Sixteen home-based students under the BRC will be given study materials, water beds, bedsheets, and diapers.
