Conte's not cool, Rooney and Young have still got it: 10 things we learnt this week

PREMIER LEAGUE in focus - the 10 things we have learnt following the midweek games.

Conte loses his cool

Antonio Conte was sent off for the first time in his Chelsea tenure after screaming in the face of the fourth official.

The Italian received great credit last season for his dignity and class when leading the Blues to the title but it was a corner that tipped him over the edge in the first half against Swansea at Stamford Bridge.

The ball appeared to deflect behind off Alfie Mawson but the referee decided to award a goal kick. Conte was then ordered to watch the rest of the game from the stands as his side won 1-0.

Evergreen Rooney still among the best

Wayne Rooney gave impending Everton boss Sam Allardyce a reason to smile as he scored a memorable hat-trick to boost the Toffees' camp after a terrible start to the season.

England's all-time top goalscorer proved he still has what it takes to perform at the top level after treating supporters to a masterclass, which included an early contender for goal of the season.

Rooney latched onto Joe Hart's terrible clearance, unleashing an unstoppable first-time effort which found the net from inside his own half, a goal that will go down in Premier League history.

Pickford proposes turning of the tide

Jordan Pickford turned in a fine performance on a night that could have put an end to Joe Hart's reign as England's number one.

Pickford, who carries the burden of being the most expensive English goalkeeper of all-time, saved a second-half Manuel Lanzini penalty as Hart had a night to forget in the opposition goal.

Hart chopped down Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a penalty before saving Wayne Rooney's spot-kick, but the rebound was tapped home.

The West Ham goalkeeper then faced further shame when his sloppy clearance was brilliantly smashed home by Rooney from inside his own half.

Giroud still has part to play for Gunners

Olivier Giroud proved yet again that he will be ready when called upon, firing a brace as Arsenal trounced Huddersfield to continue their good run of form.

The Frenchman was introduced by Arsene Wenger at half time, with the game far from over at 1-0, but the forward showed his manager why he's deserved more minutes this season with two well taken goals.

Super Sterling the match winner again

Raheem Sterling earned Pep Guardiola's Manchester City yet another three points as he broke Southampton hearts deep into stoppage time at the Etihad.

After netting the winner at Huddersfield on Sunday, the England international is enjoying his finest season to date and is now making winning goals his speciality after doing it several times this campaign.

Young sends Southgate a message

Ashley Young enjoyed a happy return to Vicarage Road as he continued to stake a claim to be named in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the World Cup in Russia.

The 32-year-old had United's winning goal on Saturday against Brighton taken away from him by the dubious goals panel, but there was no doubt about his two stunning strikes that helped his side to an emphatic victory on the road.

Palace positives despite dreary derby

Brighton and Crystal Palace met in top flight for the first time in 36 years but the game failed to live up to expectations as the sides played out a boring 0-0 stalemate.

There were plenty of positives for Palace though, who were unlucky not to win the game as Roy Hodgson welcomed back talisman Christian Benteke.

Mamadou Sakho was a rock at the heart of defence as the Eagles look to sure things up at the back.

The draw means that's now just one defeat in their last five matches, which will give them confidence heading into an important run of fixtures.

Vardy and Mahrez turn back time

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were back to their best to help Leicester to victory over Spurs.

First-half goals from the pair who were at the heart of the Foxes' 2015/16 Premier League triumph helped continue the impressive start the club has made under new boss Claude Puel.

Vardy was a persistent thorn in Pochettino's side and the magnificent Mahrez produced a moment of magic to double his side's advantage.

The two remain among the most feared attackers in the division.

Spurs' away day woes continue

At the start of the season, Spurs were really enjoying their travels having struggled to settle in at their new temporary Wembley home.

But now, things have drastically changed as they suffered a third consecutive away defeat at the hands of Leicester.

Pochettino's men seem to be suffering from domestic sickness, as their exceptional form in the Champions League has failed to be reflected in their league position and points tally.

West Brom need a shake-up from punchy Pardew

After a spirited draw at Spurs on Saturday, Gary Megson looked like he had lifted a deflated group of WBA players.

The Baggies were soon brought back down to earth though after squandering a two-goal lead at home to Newcastle to share the spoils.

Alan Pardew has since been unveiled as the new boss and he doesn't have long to get his feet under the table as his side face a crunch clash with former club Crystal Palace at the weekend.
