The Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) office in Moradabad launched a crackdown on quacks running their clinics in the city and registered cases against 52 persons to initiate legal proceedings under Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines. The CMO office acted following a query made under Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Reports said that a Delhi-based social activist lodged a query under RTI with the CMO office at Moradabad a year back and sought to know about action taken by the separtment against quacks, who had no medical practitioner's degree but were illegally running their clinics or hospitals.
A year back, the then CMO refused to entertain the query after which the activist filed an appeal with State Information Commissioner (SIC) Hafiz Usman’s court, after which action was taken.
Referring to action taken by CMO office, the SIC said that after the appeal was filed, he directed officers concerned to furnish complete details as sought in the application. "But when the CMO office did not respond, a warning was issued and the CMO was summoned with records so that action could be taken against officers for concealing truth or patronizing quacks in the district," he said.
Usman further said that after his warning, CMO of Moradabad, Dr Prakash Chandra appeared in person and informed that a crackdown had been launched against quacks and so far, 52 had been nabbed, their clinics and hospitals were sealed and cases were registered with different police stations in Moradabad to initiate legal proceedings.
