United were 3-0 up at the time but were pegged back to 3-2, before Jesse Lingard wrapped up a 4-2 win to save Lukaku’s blushes.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho joked that it may be his striker’s footwear which is stopping him finding the net.

And the Portuguese boss has put a call out for help.

"I think he needs a big contract with boots," Mourinho said.

"At the moment, he has no contract with any brand, that is why he is wearing black boots! 

"He needs to be paid the right money so he goes back to goals.

"Jokes apart, he works amazingly well for the team. I would never blame him for missing an easy chance, never.

"He's an amazing professional. I couldn't be happier with him."

Lukaku’s drought may continue for some time as they head into a difficult run of fixtures.

First the Red Devils travel to Arsenal on Saturday (5.30pm) before hosting CSKA Moscow on Tuesday (7.45pm).

A derby clash with league-leaders then follows on Sunday, December 10 (4.30pm).
