Stokes was suspended indefinitely by England along with Alex Hales, who was not arrested, but was out with the all-rounder in Bristol.

Stokes was not allowed to fly to Australia with the England squad for the Ashes but he was not officially removed from the squad.

The ECB were awaiting the outcome of the investigation which has today moved forward.

“We’re now in a position to provide an update on our investigation into a disorder in Bristol which happened during the early hours of Monday, 25 September,” a statement from Avon and Somerset Police read.

“A 27-year-old man suffered a fractured eye socket in the incident on Queens Road, Clifton.

“A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and was later released under investigation.

“Three other men, aged 26, 27 and 28 have all voluntarily attended police stations for interview.

“Today (29/11), we have passed a file to the Crown Prosecution Service and are now seeking charging advice.”

Stokes yesterday flew to New Zealand, having been granted permission by his employers the ECB to play domestic cricket for the Canterbury Knights in Christchurch, where he was born.

It caused rampant speculation that he was being prepared for a call-up to Joe Root's squad for the Ashes, but Canterbury coach Gary Stead denied that it was the purpose of the trip.

"We had been in talks with his agent about possibly coming to play here but there's still a bit of water to go under the bridge. I hope we can make it work," Stead said.

"The Ashes wasn't discussed."
