The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) unveiled another ICT-ready school in Centurion's Olievenhoutbosch community this week.
Seshegong Secondary School is the GDE's latest smart school and is part of efforts to drive technology adoption as well as change the face of township schools, according to MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
Catering to 1 200 children from grades eight to 12, the school is described as a modern IT facility with a design prototype that incorporates the Department of Basic Education's national schools infrastructure norms and standards.
The Seshegong Secondary School features the latest technology tools, including smart classrooms with smart interactive boards and WiFi. Intercoms, CCTV cameras and intruder alarm systems are also included.
Furthermore, the education facility is green school equipped with roof and wall insulation, solar water heating for administration and nutrition, as well as glazing to maximise natural light in the building and reduce energy loss. It also has energy-saving lighting and rainwater harvesting.
Its success cannot be measured merely in direct benefits, such as the number of buildings erected, but rather the human benefit the community derives from being part of the process, notes the department.
Commenting on the newly-opened school, Lesufi says: "We are proud to present this mega school to the people of Olievenhoutbosch and plead with the community to protect this school for many generations. We will continue to open such schools every month until 2019, in our quest to change the face of township schools."
