'Regional Consultation on Sustainable Development Goal 2' at Hotel Imphal Classic on 14 Nov 2017

The United Nations General Assembly, in 2015, adopted a set of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) with specific targets, which are to be achieved by 2030.

The 193 Member States of the United Nations, following negotiations that lasted from July 2012 till August 2015, have agreed upon the text of a new document entitled, “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. This agenda contains 17 goals and 169 targets.

Today Human Rights Alert (HRA), Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) of Manipur University, Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (WNTA)[1] and the Civil Society Academy (CSA) [2] organized a day long "Regional Consultation on Sustainable Development Goal 2: Status of Hunger and Poverty among marginalized Communities of the North East Region of India" at Hotel Imphal Classic.

Shri. Radhabinod Koijam former Chief Minster of Manipur was the Chief Guest. Prominent civil society leaders and academicians deliberated on themes of the “SDGs and their linkages with the national policies”, “Role of Civil Society Organizations”, “Combating Hunger and Poverty” and “Leave no one behind” etc.

At the end of the spirited deliberation a Working Group consisting of Prof. E. Bijoy Singh, Mr. H. Ibotombi Khuman, Dr. Deben Bachaspatimayum, Mr. Tasaduk Ariful Hussain, Mr. Domin Loya, Ms Nandini Thokchom and Mr. Babloo Loitongbam was formed to monitor SDGs in the North East Region.

[1] Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (WNTA), a network consisting of over 4000 civil society organizations across the country, is actively engaged in popularizing, monitoring and advocacy on SDGs: Agenda 2030 since 2012. In coordination with members from civil society organizations, WNTA had released a “Civil Society Report on SDGs: Agenda 2030”. WNTA has also organized national, state and community level consultations on SDGs: Agenda 2030.

[2] The Civil Society Academy (CSA), an initiative of Welthungerhilfe is a leading organization that supports civil society actors in developing capacities and realizing opportunities in combating hunger and poverty. It focuses on leadership in civil society, advocacy towards ending hunger and poverty and designing effective programs towards combatting poverty and hunger. It consists of an international team that is highly motivated and strongly committed to the organization's values: empowerment, social justice, and sustainable development.
