CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked a former deputy director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly acquiring assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The CBI acted against Gurnam Singh, 59, on a tipoff. A CBI team raided his house in Sector 18 and seized several documents. The accused has been booked under Section 13 (1) (criminal misconduct by public servant) and 13(2) (punishment for misconduct by public servant) under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Gurnam is at present posted as section officer in Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh, and is going to retire on November 30. He had remained on deputation with the ED at Chandigarh for around five years.
It is learnt that disproportionate assets worth Rs 1.54 crore have come to light in the initial stage of the search.
The CBI team said it had found documents pertaining to disproportinate assets. Ram Gopal, head, anti-corruption branch, CBI, has ordered an inquiry to be held by inspector Sharad Bhasin.
A senior cop said relevant entries in the accounts of Gurnam Singh and his family members would also be scrutinized to bring out more information in the case.
The ED had registered a case against Gurnam earlier and was investigating the matter. Gurnam wanted to seek further extension of deputation in the ED last year, but did not get it due to corruption complaints against him. Gurnam had even approached the central administrative tribunal (CAT) at Chandigarh and the Punjab and Haryana high court, but the courts refused to intervene in ED's decision.
