PUNE: Savitribai Phule Pune University will get a T-55 battle tank as a "gift" from the Southern Command of the Indian Army on Wednesday.

The Russian-make tank, which played a key role in 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars, will be installed on the premises of the defence & strategic studies department on Wednesday, an official release from the university said.

The tank will be installed in the presence of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command Lieutenant General P M Hariz.

A few university sources said the department has a long association with Southern Command and many senior defence officials have received doctorates from the department which has a defence officer chair.

"The defence authorities instituted the Chhatrapati Shivaji policy chair and a senior official from the Army is appointed for two years to the chair," Vijay Khare, head of the department, said.
