Man Utd news: David Moyes and Louis van Gaal had transfer plans for Ashley Young

MANCHESTER UNITED star Ashley Young would have left Old Trafford had David Moyes got his way - but Louis van Gaal always saw the quality the England veteran possessed.

Young is back in the fold for club and country after fending off the likes of Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian to nail down a spot in Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side.

The England international bagged a brilliant brace against Watford last night, firing the Red Devils to a 4-2 win at Vicarage Road.

It is a far cry from previous years, where Young has been on the fringes of the Manchester United starting XI.

And the Daily Mail say both Moyes and Van Gaal had differing transfer plans when it came to the former Aston Villa man.

Moyes got many things wrong during his torrid stint at Old Trafford.

Announced as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor and anointed as The Chosen One, many expected the Scot to bring the same continuity the club had experienced during the reign of his compatriot.

Performances were bad and results even worse. But Moyes also got it wrong with Young.

He supposedly tried to offload the 32-year-old during his sole January transfer window in charge.

But, with suitors seemingly low, Young ended up staying put.

The Daily Mail say, however, that Van Gaal had different ideas.

The blockbuster arrival of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid in 2014 was again meant to signal an end to Young’s Old Trafford stint.

Yet towards the latter stages of Van Gaal’s first season, Di Maria was on the bench and Young in the side. The England ace was also the star of the show in a 4-2 derby win over Manchester City.

Van Gaal took Young aside in pre-season that year, with the former Villa utility man fearing the worst.

But the Dutchman reassured him of his importance and Young has not looked back since.
