SNP tries to force David Davis to face CONTEMPT proceedings in Brexit papers backlash

BREXIT secretary David Davis could be held in contempt of parliament after he gave MPs an 850-page dossier on the economic impact of Brexit “that does not contain any actual impact analysis”.

SNP MP Pete Wishart complained to the Brexit negotiator who claimed too much sensitive information was withheld.

The study of 58 economic sectors delivered on Monday night does not contain any sensitive information, which caused Hilary Benn, the chairman of the Commons Exiting the EU Committee, to summon Mr Davis to an urgent meeting.

This is contempt, and the Government must be held accountable for their failure to comply

SNP MP Pete Wishart

Mr Wishart said: “David Davis campaigned for parliamentary accountability and taking back control during the EU referendum - yet today we find the Brexit Secretary and the UK Government doing everything they can to make sure MPs are unable to scrutinise the Government’s Brexit plans.”

The SNP MP asked the Speaker to consider “bringing contempt motions” against the Government.

He said: “This is contempt, and the Government must be held accountable for their failure to comply”.

Speaker of the Commons, John Bercow, said he would do his duty if a complaint of contempt was made against the minister.

If Mr Davis did end up being held against the accusations, it could mean he is suspended or expelled from the Commons.

MPs passed a Commons motion three weeks ago calling on the government to release the Brexit select committee documents on the potential economic effect of leaving the European Union.

The Scottish Brexit minister Michael Russell said the dossier does not contain any impact analysis and urged the the UK Government “to be upfront with people and publish these reports immediately”.

The Department for Exiting the EU claimed the full information was not able to be disclosed due to its commercial sensitivity and ability to undermine talks in Brussels.

He said: “I have written to the Speaker once again to raise a privilege complaint over this Government’s shambolic handling of the latest episode in their Brexit breakdown”.

Brexit minister Robin Walker said he hoped the “accessible and informative” material would be made available to all MPs in due course, but defended the removal of commercially sensitive details that he suggested could damage the UK’s negotiating strategy.

However, Labour MP, Hilary Benn, who chairs the cross-party Exiting the European Union Committee said it was “their job” to decide what was published and he disagreed the group could not be trusted to respect confidentiality.

In a letter to the Commons committee, Brexit Secretary David Davis said details were being kept private because all of the 21 MPs may not keep them secret.

Mr Davis is set to be grilled by MPs in front of the Brexit select committee next week amid the row over the documents.
