Young discusses Watford heroics

12:20: Ashley Young has spoken out after Manchester United's 4-2 win over Watford yesterday.

“Of course, it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet," he said.

"I haven’t done that for a long while. In the game the other day [against Brighton] I tried to claim that goal but I’ll definitely be claiming these two!

“But for us today, it was more important to get the three points. It’s a tough place to come and we’re delighted to come away with the three points.”

Griezmann fear

09:40: Barcelona fear Antoine Griezmann may join Manchester United.

Both clubs are being tipped to land the Atletico Madrid hitman.

And Don Balon say Barcelona are worried he may move to Old Trafford instead.

Lingard compared to Mkhitaryan

08:40: Paul Scholes thinks Jesse Lingard is as good a player as Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“Maybe they [his teammates] don't trust him [Lingard] enough," Scholes told BT Sport.

"He's not the big name of a Mkhitaryan or somebody like that. He's got that ability. He's got the same level of ability as Mkhitaryan.

"He can score goals, he can make goals. What's his best position?

"He has to establish himself now, he has to be more consistent, he has to produce more performances like that to make him a real first team player.

“I don't think he's ever gone on from that bit-part player yet - now he needs to."

Zlatan's entrance

07.55: Jose Mourinho wanted Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the pitch against Watford - because of Hornets goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Manchester United boosted their title chances with a 4-2 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road last night.

And journalist Duncan Castles claims Mourinho had a weird reason for sending on the 36-year-old.

Kevin Affleck tweeted that Castles has told him Mourinho wanted him to defend against Watford goalkeeper Gomes should he go up for a corner.

“Fascinating tactical insight and attention to detail from Jose Mourinho just now, @DuncanCastles.

“He said he wanted Zlatan on just to mark Heurelho Gomes at a corner if Watford, at 3-2, got one.”

Rio Ferdinand Romelu Lukaku claim

07:00: Rio Ferdinand has pinpointed Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return as the key reason behind Romelu Lukaku’s struggles at Manchester United.

Lukaku fired yet another blank last night at Vicarage Road as United ran out 4-2 winners away to Watford.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, came off the bench with two minutes to spare against Watford, replacing Jesse Lingard.

And Ferdinand thinks the towering Swede’s presence has only served to worry Lukaku further.

“He'll come out of this. I think that maybe the bigger problem for him is Zlatan Ibrahimovic being there,” Ferdinand told BT Sport when asked about Lukaku’s struggles.

“Mentally, having a big striker behind you who wants to play, that's a pressure (coming) from within, and sometimes people find that hard to deal with.”

Jose Mourinho Liverpool dig

06:30: Jose Mourinho has expressed his relief that United didn’t crumble like Liverpool did in the Champions League.

United raced into a 3-0 lead away to Watford last night and after the home side pulled back two, the visitors rounded off the scoring with a superb Jesse Lingard effort to snuff out the comeback.

And Mourinho is glad his side were able to stay more resolute defensively.

He said: “Watford gave us a couple of minutes where they felt anything could happen. This is football. Last week, Borussia Dortmund-Schalke, 4-0, 4-4.

“A couple of weeks ago, Liverpool (at Sevilla), 3-0, 3-3. That’s football.

“Maybe it is a good lesson. It is good to have a lesson without losing points. The next time we are winning 2-0 or 3-0, I think the players will remember this.”

Mourinho Paul Pogba surprise claim

06:00: Mourinho has revealed he was surprised Paul Pogba let his Manchester United team-mate Ashley Young take a free-kick against Watford.

Usually, Paul Pogba is on free-kick duty for United.

Young meanwhile, who hadn’t scored a Premier League goal since May 2016, was terrific at Vicarage Road, and scored his first goal a well-taken volley.

And Mourinho is surprised Pogba didn’t put up more of a fight to take the free-kick.

“Ashley [Young] trains at free-kicks and his conversion rate in training is good, so it was good he had the confidence to try it, after scoring the first goal,” Mourinho said.

"I was surprised that Paul [Pogba] gave him permission.”

Marcos Rojo complaint

05:30: Watford manager Marco Silva has blasted Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo.

The defender brought down Roberto Pereyra in the box which allowed Troy Deeney to score the resulting penalty and get the hosts back into the game.

But United remained with their full 11 men intact and were able to withstand the late pressure to secure the three points.

The decision by referee Jon Moss infuriated Silva, who believes his side would have got something out of the game had Rojo had seen red.

"When we scored the first goal we were already better, we scored the penalty and at that moment it looked like a second yellow card for Rojo,” Silva said.

“If it’s 11 against 10 it would be very difficult for them.”
